Learn the basics of flat-water kayaking or canoeing! This “geared for youth” program gets you acquainted with such terms as the bow, the stern, the gunwales and the thwart. Safety and general waterway rules are also discussed. Then take a relaxing paddle through some of the most beautiful bays around the Delawana. Don’t forget your sunscreen. Weather permitting. Ages 7+ please.

Presented by Muskoka Wildlife Centre - this is Canada's largest live-animal outreach program! Each informative presentation features a close encounter with some of Ontario's magnificent wild creatures and is designed to give the audience a better appreciation for the wildlife around them.

Explore amazing wetlands, one of the most productive types of habitats in North America. Join a Wye Marsh naturalist and get down and dirty while dip netting in a pond on Royal Island for its underwater creatures. We will help you identify the animals and insects that you discover and teach you about their life cycles and how they survive. We will also help you to understand what you can do to protect wetlands and we will always be on the lookout for toe biters!

16. Look, See, Paint

Calling all artists (and hopefuls)! Here is a chance to get out into Georgian Bay and paint what you see. One of the Wye Marsh “artsy” naturalists will lead you on a guided painting adventure to some of the most spectacular views in Ontario. Let the sunset be your inspiration! We will provide you with a small painting kit which will allow you to interpret the views as you see them. This a great opportunity to get outside and relax and record the beauty you find. No experience necessary and all ages are welcome!

17. Forrest Wonders

Discover the trees through the forest on a hike around Royal Island. With the help of a Wye Marsh naturalist and a tree key identification book, you will learn how to easily identify several different species of trees and herbaceous plants that are native to the area. Topics of discussion will include forest succession, resource management techniques, and eco-site identification. The little ones can ‘Adopt a Tree’ of their very own with a keep sake to take home with them!

Join the Wye Marsh naturalists for one of our most exciting programs. Learn all about the reptiles and amphibians of Georgian Bay during this hour and a half session. Come out and make friends with live snakes, turtles, salamanders and frogs. You will learn all about where they live, what they eat, and all of their interesting and sometimes strange characteristics. Get up close and personal with some of the world’s most exciting creatures!

19. Creatures of the Night

Experience nature as few people do…at night! Grab a flashlight and join the Wye Marsh to search for the most interesting and secretive creatures in the wild world. You will discover how some of the most amazing night creatures live and survive through the investigation of owls, bats, raccoons, and salamanders that we may find. A Wye Marsh naturalist will explain and explore some of the night’s most fascinating creatures, from moths to flying squirrels, and mosquitoes to fireflies. This evening’s show and walk will get you excited to look around in the dark!

20. GPS Geo-Caching

The future has arrived! Geo-caching, for those of you who have not heard of it, is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers called geo-caches. The Wye Marsh wants to pass our high tech skills on to you! A GPS allows a connection from the palm of your hand to satellites in space to navigate any point on our planet. Join us for a quick introduction to the basic functions of GPS navigation including understanding way-points, geo-caching, and following directional indicators. It’s easier than you think!

21. Birds of Georgian Bay

Explore the areas around Delawana and search for some of the birds that nest around Georgian Bay. We will begin with a brief slide show to introduce you to some new species or just to refresh your memory, and then we will walk the shorelines in search of many different types of birds. Great for first time birders or seasoned professionals. Binoculars included.

Georgian Bay has a rich culture of history that can be explored through stories and legends. Take a step into the past and explore the people and nature of history. We invite adults to take a break from the little ones and join us for this canoe adventure immersing you into cultures long gone. Learn about the Native peoples and European settlers as they interacted to shape the Georgian Bay of today. The canoe tour is lead by an Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association (ORCA) certified Wye Marsh naturalist.

25. Tracking Furry Critters

Join a Wye Marsh naturalist for a lesson on Ontario’s furry critters! Can you tell a Mink from an Otter? We will start you off with a slide show to clear up any confusion about the mammals of Ontario. Following this presentation and discussion, we will create plaster animal tracks for you to keep as a souvenir, and then head off for a nature hike to track down some of these critters. We will teach you some tracking techniques that are sure to impress your friends!

For both the competitive and the fun-natured person alike, orienteering is not only a rewarding and challenging sport, but is also a great way to get outdoors and enjoy nature! After learning the basic skills of compass and map reading, you will be let loose on an orienteering course where you will be looking for ‘controls’ posted within the forest. Each control is a partial answer to a riddle, one that you and your family can work together (or compete) to crack!
